The Bible Tells Me So - by Jeff Grimes

My son Keith often leads, what is no doubt one of the all time favorite in children's songs, "Jesus Loves Me." We are all familiar with the words- "Jesus loves me this I know, for the Bible tells me so...." When singing these familiar lines are we conscience of the great truth they express?

In fact, if it were not for the Bible, how would we know Jesus loves us? Would it be possible to study the stars and come to such knowledge? Could such truth be ascertained by studying ancient and modern history? How about through scientific investigation? Technology and science has advanced at an amazing rate over the last twenty or so years. Have you ever watched the TV show, "The New Detectives?" Through the use of modern technology, and forensic science, twenty-year-old crimes can now be solved.

Yet, with all the wisdom, and knowledge of "modern man" he cannot come to a knowledge of God through his own investigation. God cannot be discovered under a microscope, or in a test tube. The only way we have any knowledge of God, is through the revelation of Himself on the pages of he Bible. First Corinthians 2:9-14 teaches this very point.

The Hebrew writer states-"God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past to the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken to us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds" (Hebrews 1:1-2).

Note: God has spoken-It stands to reason that what God said would be important. In time past God spoke to the fathers through His prophets. Now-"In these last days" God has spoken through His Son. God has a message for every generation.

The Son is said to be "heir of all things." In other words in the Son, God sums up all things spoken through the prophets. The Son is the "heir of all things" spoken by them. In Christ the Son, is the fulfillment of God's promises through the prophets. "And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise" (Galatians 3:29).

The point I am making is simply this, if God had not spoken, and revealed this "great salvation" to us, how could we have known it? How could I have ever known that "Jesus loves me", if God had not spoken through his word, and told me so? The answer-I could not have known except, as the Bible tells me so.

What a marvelous and wonderful blessing to have access to a book that reveals not only my past, where I came from, but also my present; my purpose for being here, and my future; where I am headed.

Wherever man has established himself on earth without the light from the Bible to guide him, he has engaged in all kinds of superstition, and wickedness. This is but another reminder that "...The way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps" (Jeremiah 10:23).

"Then Phillip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, [Isaiah 53] and preached unto him Jesus" (Acts 8:35). How did the man from Ethiopia know that Jesus loved him? Simple-the Bible told him so, and after he obeyed the gospel, "he went on his way rejoicing" (vs. 39).

Friends, don't wait around for a "sign" of some kind or other, the only way you can know of the grace, mercy and infinite love of God extended to you through Jesus, His only begotten Son, is to read about it in the Bible. . You too, will discover, Jesus loves you-the Bible tells you so!
